‘Waiting: The Van Duren Story’ – In Pictures
Written by A on 10 Απριλίου 2019
Music history is rife with tales of artists whose star once shone bright only to fade into obscurity at the hands of the industry itself, whether through unfair circumstances, nefarious players or, simply, bad timing.
There are a few, however, whose fates are reversed, albeit years later. This is the story of Memphis singer-songwriter Van Duren, an artist once touted as “the next Paul McCartney” following the release of his 1978 debut Are You Serious? only for his public story to, seemingly, end there.
Or not. Fast forward forty years and here we are, with Van Duren touring Australia this month, thanks to the Australian-helmed documentary Waiting – The Van Duren Story.

The doco, which is also making its Aussie screen debut this month, is the work of Australian music industry players Greg Carey (manager of The Rubens, Urthboy) and Sydney-based musician Wade Jackson, who stumbled across the Memphis artist’s album and set out to discover more about the story of Van Duren.
To celebrate the screenings of their flick, Wade and Greg have shared with Music Feeds a photo diary of their unlikely expedition to meet Van Duren, one that took them across seas into the American south, meeting rockstars, fellow musos, Scientologists and a con man or two along the way.
Have a scroll through their diary below and catch remaining ‘Waiting: The Van Duren Story’ doco screenings and accompanying Van Duren tour dates below.

And we’re off! Greg’s dream has been to wear matching tracksuits on a flight. We achieved this and it was extremely comfy. We were asked many times what sport we played and we answered darts.
2.
Alcenia’s restaurant in Memphis is amazing. It’s like you’re sitting in the living room of their home. You also get a kiss and a hug upon arrival. Go the fried chicken!
3.
Amen.
4.
Our first Halloween and it was lots of fun. We scared the crap out of a lot of folks. That’s a win!
5.
We just kept going back to this bar in Memphis. Ernestine and Hazel’s. Quite possibly the best bar in the world. A proper dive bar that’s haunted and used to be a brothel. What more could you ask for? The burgers are sensational as well.
6.
World Premiere and a 5 minute standing ovation in a 370 cap cinema. Wow! We’ve never felt like that before.
7.
Wade and Jonathan collecting the people’s choice award for best documentary at the Memphis Film Festival. (Greg had to head home before the award ceremony).
8.
Screening the film at The Grammy Museum was insane. Having Van with us was the icing on the cake. Good times!
9.
Taking Van to London for the screening at The Regent Street Cinema was amazing but to be invited to Abbey Road and see Van playing ‘Lady Madonna’ on the Lady Madonna piano in Studio 2 was priceless and a dream come true for him and us.
10.
Van on his first trip outside of the U.S to London was so much fun. Here he is at a house auction, probably still cheaper than a one bedder in Bondi. Having Van here in Australia now is so awesome, I hope you can come to the screenings and shows and meet him because I know he wants to meet y’all!
